Happy Periods Day!
February 5, 2021
Today is #HappyPeriodsDay, initiated first by सच्ची सहेली Sachhi Saheli in 2019, as a way to dismantle taboo and stigma around menstruation in India and to spread awareness and dialogue.
The Global Interfaith WASH Alliance (GIWA) & Parmarth Niketan, under Pujya Swami Chidanand Saraswatiji – Muniji and Pujya Sadhvi Bhagawati Saraswatiji’s leadership, are dedicated to nationwide efforts to empower and educate girls and women as well as their families and communities about this important social issue.
Ganga Nandini, Director of Project Implementation & Communication, GIWA, had a beautiful conversation with Sooryagayathri – a 13 year-old girl with a golden voice who is capturing the hearts of music lovers across the globe – to talk candidly about periods, ambitions and dreams.
“Some girls,” Sooryagayathri offered, “are not getting support from their families. That’s a very sad thing. We should change our mentality toward the girls…we should give them the support that they need to achieve their goals. They should be given space to work freely.”
Sharing about their first menstruation, Sooryagayathri added,”I also had a funny experience however I knew about menstruation beforehand, through school, but not every part of India has that awareness. I knew it wasn’t a scary thing, so I was able to manage the first time with my mother. But we need to share that awareness.”
Watch, listen and share this beautiful interaction between these two Divine Shaktis, and join us in spreading awareness to break the stigma around menstruation and menstrual health and hygiene!
